It also comes with an extremely powerful battery that can be cleaned for up to two hours and returns to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

It also has a feature called smart mapping, which makes use of multiple sensors to help it identify the areas in your home that need attention and create a cleaning path around them. This technology is very effective in navigating around toys that have been left on the floor or furniture legs sticking out from underneath things. It also has a sensor that snaps Roomba back to reality when it begins to drift away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles and therefore are more likely to resist tangles than previous models. They're also taller than previous rollers, and will fit better under beds and couches that are low and Vacuum Mops are designed to allow this model to move more easily on varying flooring types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models of this class, though, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect tiny bits of dirt. The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. It scored very well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It did a decent job of picking up pet hair, but it struggled with very long and thick pet fur that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and vacuum mops it's not even far from being as costly as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It still has a lot of features that we'd expect to find in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and start up and running immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do the work. It will return to its dock when it runs out of batteries or is full of sand. There are also indicator lights on top that indicate when its bin is empty, or when it requires recharging, or when it loses Wi-Fi.
